Depth Filtration vs. Surface Filtration in Food, Beverage and Pharmaceuticals

In the manufacture of beverages, food and pharmaceuticals, depth and surface filters are commonly used. Depth filtration forces liquids through a random pattern of channels in filter media in order to trap particles. Depth filtration often functions as rough or primary filtration, because it removes larger particles before they reach finer pleated and membrane filters, extending the life and freshness of “downstream” filtration surfaces.
